WHAT I AM READING...The truth is, if I'm not writing, you'll probably find me reading. Whether it's at night before I go to sleep (an absolute must for me) or throughout the day. My book list is long and it grows more and more every single day thanks to the incredible authors who continue to provide endless hours of enjoyment.
I have had a love for reading since I was a kid. It never went away and then roughly fifteen or so years ago, I ventured into a whole new world of books. I have a long list of favorites, far too many to name them all. |
Books I've read recently:

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS
a note from nicoleIn May of 2013, I made an announcement that was quite difficult for me to make. One that has honestly changed my life in ways I never expected. For those of you who were hanging with me at that time, you learned something about me that I generally don't tell many people. It isn't something that I share easily, nor do I take it lightly. But, just as I learned at the time, I'm not the only one. And by speaking up, I am hoping that we can raise awareness. Together. |
I suffer from severe depression.
I manage my depression with the help of my doctor and with medication. Thanks to the treatment that I receive, for the most part, I function quite normally. There are plenty of ups and downs, and I'm so grateful for the amazing family and friends that I have because they help me through each day - and yes, I take it one day at a time.
This is my story. But I am one of many who suffer from some form of mental illness. This is a disease that affects more people than we realize. Which is why I've decided that raising awareness is something tI'm going to focus my efforts on. This is important to me and my family. So, thank you for supporting me simply by reading this.

To Keith Milano
Dear Keith,
Although we have never actually met, I wanted to let you know that you have changed my life in inexplicable ways. In ways that I never imagined possible. Some might say that it was a mutual love of books that introduced me to your sister, Denise. I, however, believe that you had a hand in that introduction. You, a man who suffered in a way so many people still don't understand, brought us together for reasons far greater than mere happenstance. Thanks to your family's courage and strength, so many of us have learned your story. And through your story and those who have stories similar, we are learning that there are options, there is help. Mental illness is still misunderstood by so many, but there are people who understand the darkness is real, and it needs attention.

It wasn't until recently that I was able to share my own story about my battle with depression. This, my friend, is something that I am forever grateful to you for. You have made me stronger.
So, from from your perch high above us all, as you look down upon us, I hope you can see all of the lives you've affected, all of the people you have helped, and all of the love that has been reserved just for you. Out of the darkness walkMy family and I have been participating in the Out of the Darkness Walk in Austin, Texas, for the past few years. It's important to help raise money for awareness and this is one of the ways we choose to contribute. The money is raised by the Austin Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
